BAKU, Wednesday 20 November 2024 — In response to Minister Chris Bowen’s announcement from COP29 today that Australia will join the Call to Action for no new coal from the Powering Past Coal Alliance, the following quotes can be attributed to Dr Susie Byers, Head of Advocacy at Greenpeace Australia Pacific:
“Greenpeace notes Minister Bowen’s announcement from Baku that Australia will join the Powering Past Coal Alliance’s Call to Action for no new coal, committing to build no new unabated coal power stations.
“This is a strong signal from the government that the fossil fuel era is drawing to a close, and a final nail in the coffin for dirty and expensive coal power in Australia.
“Central to the pact is an appeal for other countries to sign up and join the agreement to not build any new coal plants. For Australia to walk the talk, it must back up its commitment by ceasing thermal coal exports — the only way to ensure no Australian coal is powering new coal plants, anywhere in the world.
“The science is crystal clear — there is no room for new coal, oil and gas projects in the midst of a climate crisis.
“We look forward to the Australian government now following through with this encouraging commitment to ending the coal era both domestically and internationally.”
