Week 5 of the 2024-25 NFL season kicked off on an aesthetically pleasing note, as the Atlanta Falcons wore their 1966 throwback uniforms in Thursday night’s thrilling overtime victory against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
They won’t be the only team in a classic design this weekend, though, as the Denver Broncos will wear their “Orange Crush” throwback uniforms against the Las Vegas Raiders, the Jacksonville Jaguars will don their “Prowler” throwback uniforms against the Indianapolis Colts and the San Francisco 49ers will break out the home version of 1994 throwback uniforms against the Arizona Cardinals.
This will mark the first time since their Thanksgiving Day victory over the Dallas Cowboys in 2001 that the Broncos will wear these threads, while the Jaguars have never worn throwback uniforms. The 49ers, meanwhile, have worn the home version of their throwback uniforms at least twice every season since 2021.
Interestingly, the 49ers were not originally scheduled to wear these uniforms until Oct. 27 against the Dallas Cowboys, but after unsuccessfully petitioning the league to wear white jerseys at home due to a heatwave in Santa Clara, they were permitted to switch to the throwback uniforms, which feature white pants.
It’s unclear how this will impact the rest of their uniform schedule, as teams are only allowed to wear alternate or throwback uniforms three times each season and they are currently scheduled to wear the road version against the Seattle Seahawks on Oct. 10 and the home version against the Detroit Lions on Dec. 30.
Elsewhere, the Houston Texans will debut their new H-Town blue-accented Color Rush uniforms against the Buffalo Bills. They – like the Broncos and Jaguars above – have also unveiled a special field design to mark the occasion, with their new secondary logo prominently displayed midfield.
The Cincinnati Bengals will also sport a never-before-seen uniform combination, pairing their standard orange helmets and black home jerseys with their new orange pants against the Baltimore Ravens. They previously wore the orange pants with orange helmets and jerseys in their season-opening loss to the New England Patriots.
The weekend will come to a close with the New Orleans Saints wearing their Color Rush uniforms, including their black alternate helmet, on Monday Night Football at the Kansas City Chief. They’re notably 0-3 in their black helmets since they debuted in 2022, and even ditched them in favor of their standard gold helmets for a Color Rush game late last season.
