In recent years, Universal has been digging back through its extensive catalog of iconic films and bringing them to a new generation. Despite the financial setback the studio faced with the release of the 2017 Tom Cruise-led reboot of The Mummy, Universal still pushed forward with its plans of retelling these iconic stories when they hired filmmaker Leigh Whannell to helm The Invisible Man. The studio’s decision paid off in a big way and now, interested audiences can head to Prime Video to check out The Invisible Man as it’s currently streaming.
A Remake Based On A Classic Novel
Starring The Handmaid’s Tale’s Elisabeth Moss, the movie serves as a remake of the 1933 film of the same name, which pulls parts of its story from H.G. Wells’s 1897 novel. In The Invisible Man, which joins the ranks of Prime Video streaming alongside a solid lineup of other on-point options for the spooky season, Moss plays Cecilia Kass, a woman who has risked her life to escape from an abusive relationship with her ex-boyfriend, Adrian Griffin (Oliver Jackson-Cohen).
After Adrian allegedly commits suicide, it seems like Cecilia will finally find some peace, but her life is soon flipped upside down when it appears that her ex is still torturing her from beyond the grave.
As those who check out The Invisible Man while it’s streaming on Prime Video will come to find out, the movie kicks off on an incredibly intense note and never takes its foot off the gas. It’s a high-octane thrill ride but should also be approached with consideration and care by those who have experienced domestic abuse and gone through traumatic relationships as it’s rather full-on in that sentiment.
At the same time, it’s this in-depth look at how these types of relationships can forever alter our brain chemistry that allows Leigh Whannell to deliver a gut punch from beginning to end.Â
Pandemic Affected Release
The year was 2020, and movie theatergoers had no idea that their lives were about to change for the foreseeable future when the COVID-19 pandemic hit and lockdowns were implemented. Watching The Invisible Man on streaming is certainly akin to how so many enjoyed the movie when it was first released as it would shift from theaters to digital rental just three weeks after its arrival.
Still, even with its short time in cinemas, the movie was able to rake in an impressive $145 million against its $7 million budget marking it as a financial success for Universal – a win the studio definitely needed.
Universal Monster Movies
Obviously happy with the job that Leigh Whannell achieved through his work in the Elisabeth Moss-led thriller, Universal tapped the director to co-pen and helm the upcoming Christopher Abbott and Julia Garner-led Monsters movie, Wolf Man.
With the success of Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin’s (known collectively as Radio Silence) Abigail – which served as a reimagining of the 1936 classic Dracula’s Daughter – earlier this year, the studio is on the right track to bring new life to these iconic films. Like The Invisible Man, both Abigail and The Mummy are currently streaming, with both now available on Peacock.Â
