The American Hockey League’s Grand Rapids Griffins are getting a little more color into their lives with their revamped uniforms for the 2024-25 season.
The Griffins unveiled the new uniforms on their website and social media channels on Thursday, September 19. It’s the first time the team has changed their regular jerseys since 2015-16.
While the Griffins’ color palette hasn’t changed, the new jerseys place a greater emphasis on red and gold while de-emphasizing silver. “Griffins were guardians of gold in ancient lore,” the team says on its website, “making the enhanced use of gold appropriate in the team’s jerseys.”
The main part of the shoulders on the Griffins’ new white jersey is now red instead of black, with black and gold outlines. The main stripe around the sleeves and waist is red, with narrower gold and black stripes inside it. The collar is red with black trim and white laces.
While the Griffins’ dark jersey retains a black base, the shoulders are now red with white and gold outlines. The stripes around the waist and sleeves are similar to those on the white jersey, but with white replacing black in the middle stripe.
Photos posted by the Griffins on Thursday showed both jerseys paired with red pants and gloves. The white jersey is paired with a white helmet, while the black jersey is paired with a red helmet. Both jerseys are paired with socks of the same base color and striping that matches the sleeves.
Both jerseys now feature a new number font on the sleeves and back, and the names on the back are set in a new italicized font. The contrasting nameplate that used to feature on the Griffins’ white jersey has been eliminated.
Both jerseys also feature the logo of the team’s NHL parent club, the Detroit Red Wings, on the left shoulder and the Griffins’ secondary “GRG” shield logo on the right shoulder. The highlights in the shield logo remain silver this season, but will change to gold for the 2025-26 season.
AHL teams wear dark jerseys at home until the Christmas break, then switch to white jerseys at home until the end of the regular season. They then typically go back to dark jerseys at home for the playoffs.
The Griffins open their 2024-25 AHL regular season at home on Friday, October 11, against the Milwaukee Admirals.
