Tim Mellon, a reclusive scion of the billionaire American banking dynasty, has given another $50mn to a Donald Trump campaign fund, cementing his status as the Republican presidential nominee’s most generous donor this election cycle.

Mellon, who donated the cash on July 15, has so far given a total of $115mn to Make America Great Again, according to the federal filing released Tuesday, or 60 per cent of the political action committee’s haul.

Mellon previously gave $65mn to the group, a so-called ‘super Pac’, including $50mn on May 31, a day after the former US president was convicted of falsifying business records in a New York hush money trial.

He has also donated $25mn to a super Pac supporting independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
