Liverpool are reportedly among the clubs showing an interest in former Manchester United midfielder Angel Gomes amid his impressive England national team debut. The deep-lying playmaker earned a call-up to the Three Lions squad for UEFA Nations League action.
The Sun reports that Newcastle United are admirers of Gomes, whose contract with LOSC Lille expires next summer. The Magpies, Merseysiders, Tottenham Hotspur, and Borussia Dortmund are also monitoring the Red Devils’ former academy graduate.
Gomes starred in England’s 2-0 win against Finland on Tuesday (September 10), pulling the strings in midfield. He made one key pass and won four of eight ground duels, and Harry Kane bagged a brace at Wembley.
Manchester United didn’t opt to sell Gomes when he left Old Trafford four years ago; he wanted more game time. He was out of contract and joined Ligue 1 side Lille, where he’s earned more prominence.
Gomes appeared 45 times across competitions last season, scoring two goals and providing 10 assists. Lille is jointly owned by United’s co-owners INEOS, which makes Liverpool’s interest intriguing.
Red Devils fans would be outraged to see one of their academy gems head to Anfield. He made 10 senior appearances during his time at Old Trafford.
Ex-Manchester United star Angel Gomes would emulate England icon by joining Liverpool
Michael Owen was the last player to play for Liverpool and Manchester United. The England icon’s decision to join Sir Alex Ferguson’s Red Devils in 2009 didn’t go down well at Anfield.
The only Englishman to win a Ballon d’Or had been a hero previously in Merseyside, so the situation differed from Gomes’. He was only just getting started in his career before departing Old Trafford in August 2020.
However, Gomes still had the support of Manchester United when leaving with his former youth coach Nicky Butt tipping him for a bright future. He told club media when the attacking midfielder stalled over a new contract:
“He has big a future, but he still has a long way to go. It’s not a case of signing the contract and going straight into the first team.”
Gomes would be joining a Liverpool side brimming with exciting talent under Arne Slot. Their new Dutch coach was hardly backed in the summer, and only Italian winger Federico Chiesa arrived from Juventus.
Slot has made an impressive start to his reign with three wins on the bounce, including a 3-0 win away at United. He could be eyeing more depth in midfield.
