Manchester United have confirmed the appointment of Portuguese manager, Ruben Amorim from Sporting Clube de Portugal as their next manager. The 39-year-old has replaced Erik ten Hag after the Dutch manager was dismissed earlier this week.
The Portuguese tactician becomes the youngest-ever manager in the club’s history and will be tasked with replicating his fine form with his previous club with the Red Devils.
Amorim has not tasted defeat in any competition this season since his side fell in the Portuguese Super Cup final to FC Porto in a thrilling 4-3 game.
Manchester United and Ruben Amorim have agreed to a deal until the summer of 2027 with the option for another year. The 20-time English champions currently sit in 14th place in the league and will begin their new era under the Portuguese tactician on November 11.
Assistant manager Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge of the team until Amorim arrives.
“How many Portuguese coaches are prepared for the weight and responsibility of taking charge of Barcelona?” – When Deco questioned Ruben Amorim’s abilities
In February this year, Barcelona sporting director Deco questioned the abilities of Manchester United’s new manager Ruben Amorim. He was initially tipped to take the reins at the Blaugrana earlier in the year when the Catalan club were looking for a replacement to club legend Xavi. However, the club opted to bring in Hansi Flick and Deco explained the club’s decision, telling Nascer do Sol via FotMob in February:
“How many Portuguese coaches are prepared for the weight and responsibility of taking charge of Barcelona, especially Barcelona with all the difficulties it faces? Tell me. I know that Ruben Amorim is doing a good job at Sporting and that, on top of that, he plays with a style similar to ours. But he also has very little experience.”
Ruben Amorim responded to his compatriot’s comments, saying via FotMob:
“It’s a fact, and I just want to have experience to be Sporting’s coach. As long as my people don’t remind me that I’m inexperienced and I’ve only been a coach for four years.”
Manchester United will hope that the young manager can prove the doubters wrong and begin a new era of success with the club in the years to come. He is expected to be in the dugout to face Ipswich town on November 24 in what will be his first game in charge of the English giants.
