Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone once opened up on how she was impressed by her now-husband Andre’s honesty and commitment to God. The incident happened during a beach meetup, where they discussed Proverbs 4:23.
In her memoir Far Beyond Gold: Running from Fear to Faith, published in January 2024, McLaughlin-Levrone recalled preparing a speech to tell Andre as she was concerned by their relationship progressing too quickly. During their beach meetup, she used Proverbs 4:23 – ‘Above all else, guard your heart’ to suggest they take a step back to protect themselves from being emotionally hurt.
However, the response given by Andre Levrone at that moment wasn’t something that the track star was expecting. He explained to her that it was about guarding our hearts from sin and selfishness and not against people who encourage godliness. He further questioned her whether she viewed him as someone who encouraged godliness or not.
Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone realised how Andre was different. In her memoir, she spoke about how she was moved by Andre’s honesty, adding:
“No man had ever said anything like that to me before. I didn’t understand how he’d gotten to a place where he could speak so openly about his past mistakes. For years, I’d tried to hide mine. Bury my shame. Run from it. Of course, that hadn’t worked. Mistakes and insecurities haunted me nearly every day of my life. But now with Andre, my past didn’t seem like something I needed to hide from.”
The 400m star hurdler was also impressed by Andre’s openness about his past as he believed his mistakes didn’t define his present due to Jesus’ forgiveness. This made her realize that she didn’t need to carry the burden of her past with Andre in her life.
“When Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone feels a little nervous, I may be nervous” – Andre Levrone on being nervous when wife races
On July 9, 2023, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone put on a commanding show in the 400m at the US Championships as she won with a world-leading performance, clocking 48.74s. Following this, her husband Andre was questioned on whether he gets nervous watching Sydney when she competes. To which, he responded, via Citius Mag:
“When Sydney feels a little nervous, I may be nervous but today she was so calm, cool and collective that I wasn’t nervous at all I was just confident she entrusted it to the Lord I entrusted it to the Lord. We had a wonderful response today, so I’m just happy.”
It is worth noting that Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone and husband Andre married in May 2022 in a vineyard wedding after he proposed to her in August 2021.
