India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav took to Instagram to share pictures of himself bowling during the third T20I against Sri Lanka in Pallekele. He had just six runs to defend in the final over and yet managed to pick a couple of wickets and take the game to the Super Over.
As the pitch in Pallekele for the third T20I had grip and turn on offer for the spinners, Suryakumar decided to bring Rinku Singh and himself into the attack for the final two overs.
Suryakumar Yadav captioned the Instagram post:
“N𝙊𝙏 in parellel universe 😂”
The game went to the Super Over where Washington Sundar conceded just two runs and picked up a couple of wickets. Suryakumar then walked out to bat and swept the first ball to the boundary to help India complete a 3-0 whitewash.
Suryakumar Yadav on giving Rinku Singh the penultimate over
Sri Lanka needed nine runs to win off two overs when Suryakumar Yadav threw the ball to Rinku Singh. The punt worked wonders as Rinku dismissed Kusal Perera and Ramesh Mendis while conceding just three runs.
On being asked about the decision to give Rinku the penultimate over ahead of bonafide options like Mohammed Siraj, the Indian T20I captain told Sony Sports Network:
“The decision for the 20th over was easy; the difficult part was for the 19th over. Siraj and a few others had their overs left. But I felt Rinku was better suited for that wicket because I have seen him bowling and I made him practice a lot at the nets. I felt it was right and that is why I took that call.”
Suryakumar is delighted that the decision worked wonders as he now has an extra bowling option to rely upon.
