Prior to his death, Jones did not publicly share that he was battling cancer. Jones passed away at age 91 earlier this month.
“Tonight, with full but broken hearts, we must share the news of our father and brother Quincy Jones’ passing. And although this is an incredible loss for our family, we celebrate the great life that he lived and know there will never be another like him,” Jones’ family said in a statement, per multiple outlets.
Jones is survived by by his children: Jolie, 71, whom he shared with his first wife, Jeri Caldwell, Martina, 58, and Quincy III, whom he shared with his second wife, actress Ulla Andersson, Rachel, 61, whom he shared with ex-girlfriend Carol Reynolds, Kidada, 50, and actress Rashida, 48, whom he shared with third wife Peggy Lipton, and daughter Kenya, 31, whom he shared with ex-girlfriend Nastassja Kinski.
Following her dad’s death, Rashida shared an emotional tribute.
“My dad was nocturnal his whole adult life. He kept ‘jazz hours’ starting in high school and never looked back. When I was little, I would wake up in the middle of the night to search for him,” Rashida wrote via Instagram on November 7. “Undoubtedly, he would be somewhere in the house, composing (old school, with a pen and sheet music). He would never send me back to bed. He would smile and bring me into his arms while he continued to work…there was no safer place in the world for me.”
She continued, “He was a giant. An icon. A culture shifter. A genius. All accurate descriptions of my father but his music (and ALL of his work) was a channel for his love. He WAS love. He made everyone he ever met feel loved and seen. That’s his legacy. I was fortunate enough to experience this love in close proximity.”
One week after Jones’ death, his family gathered for a private funeral in Los Angeles. The family told the Associated Press that the “intimate ceremony included Mr. Jones’ seven children, his brother, two sisters, and immediate family members.”
No further details about the memorial were shared, but the brood noted that they were “enormously grateful for the outpouring of condolences and tributes from his friends and fans from around the world.”
