The head of the National Human Rights Commission said Friday that Korea should no longer tolerate discrimination against and hate of sexual minorities.

“We should safeguard the dignity and value as humans as well as the basic democratic values of diversity and human rights protection. That is an uncompromisable duty,” Song Doo-hwan said in a statement marking the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia.

He also voiced concerns over the recent abolition by regional councils of ordinances for students’ human rights for reasons of “encouraging homosexuality and causing confused sexual identities.”

“It it very worrisome as such actions appear to imply that sexual minorities would not be acknowledged as members of our society,” he noted. (Yonhap)
