Two X-ray scanners and three walk-through metal detectors are installed at the entrance of the National Museum of Korea (NMK)’s permanent exhibition halls in Yongsan District, central Seoul, Tuesday. Starting Tuesday, the NMK is resuming its security checkpoints, two years after their removal in May 2022, citing “recent threats of terrorism reported against major institutions in the country, including museums, and the rising concern about the safety of our cultural heritage,” referencing the vandalization of the walls of Gyeongbok Palace last December as a reason for such enhanced measures.
