China has rallied to the top spot in the updated medal standings in the Paris Olympics as of August 1. The Asian giants have secured 19 medals in total with nine of them being the elusive gold. China has won seven silver and three gold medals as well.
France is second in the medal count among the top contenders, having amassed a total of 26 medals, including eight gold, ten silver, and eight bronze so far. France’s success spans multiple disciplines, with notable performances in sports like fencing, judo, swimming, and triathlon in the Paris Olympics.
Japan follows closely with 15 medals (eight gold, three silver, and four bronze), showcasing strong performances across a variety of events. Australia is also a strong competitor, securing 16 medals with a balanced tally of seven gold, six silver, and three bronze.
Great Britain stands fourth with 17 medals, including six gold, six silver, and five bronze, reflecting their continued excellence in the Olympics. The Republic of Korea has earned 12 medals, comprising six gold, 3 silver, and 3 bronze. The United States has a significant presence with 30 medals. Italy, Canada, and Germany round out the top ten with 13, 7, and 6 medals, respectively, each showing competitive performances in several events.
On the other hand, India who have secured two bronze medals, both in shooting, have slipped to the 39th position in the Paris Olympics medal standings. Manu Bhaker brought in the first one in women’s individual 10m air pistol. The young shooter also teamed with Sarabjot Singh to bring up the second medal for India.
India with mixed showing on Day 5 at the Paris Olympics
On Day 5 of the Paris Olympics 2024, Indian athletes had mixed fortunes. In badminton, PV Sindhu, Lakshya Sen, and HS Prannoy all advanced to the Round of 16 with strong performances. However, in table tennis, both Manika Batra and Sreeja Akula were eliminated despite remarkable efforts.
In archery, Deepika Kumari progressed to the Round of 16, while Tarundeep Rai was knocked out. Boxers Lovlina Borgohain and Nishant Dev reached the quarterfinals.
In shooting, Swapnil Kusale made it to the finals, but Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar and others did not advance. Equestrian Anush Agarwalla finished with a score of 66.444, ending his run.
