USL Super League’s DC Power FC Revamp Crest Before Season Kickoff – SportsLogos.Net News

Must read

A little over a month after they first unveiled a crest and with about six weeks before their first match, the newest professional soccer team in Washington, D.C., has had to revamp their crest.

D.C. Power Football Club unveiled the new crest on Wednesday, June 26. They had previously launched a crest in May, but that one has now been scrapped and the new one is being used on their website and social media channels, as well as the USL Super League website.

The new logo features a royal blue shield — a marked departure from the red used on the crest launched in May — with a silhouette of the Washington Monument in the middle. White wings spread out from the monument, with three lightning bolts formed in the negative spaces between the wings on each side. The bolts represent “the three communities that converge to drive the power center of the DMV and lift women’s soccer to new heights.”

“POWER FC” is written out in a black rectangle above the blue shield, and an interlocking “DC” monogram appears inside the shield, above the monument. These elements carried forward from the previous version of the club’s crest.

“There are multiple variables to consider when launching a new club and the crest is a key part. We take pride in DC being our home and decided to have our crest reflect just that of our beloved city from the blue skyline, the unforgettable Tidal Basin, and the Washington Monument as part of the center of our city. We are thrilled with the new logo, and we are excited to unveil branded jerseys, apparel, and merchandise in the near future.”

— Jordan Stuart, DC Power Football Club president

Power FC didn’t give a reason for the revamped crest, though there was speculation on social media and other internet forums that the old crest amd color scheme bore too close a resemblance to the brand for Honda Powersports. (The first thing that popped into your correspondent’s head, though, was the Canada Post logo.)

However, Washington news radio station WTOP reported that “no outside influences or legal issues came to play when the decision was made to change the team’s identity change before preseason.” They also reported that, according to club president Jordan Stuart, “ideas of using different images and variations of the logo that relate to D.C. did not work well with the color pattern selected by the organization.”

Power FC is one of eight teams slated to play in the inaugural USL Super League season. They’ll play their home games at Audi Field, which they’ll share with Major League Soccer side D.C. United. Devin Talbott, a part-owner of D.C. United, is also part of Power FC’s ownership group, along with Angel Reese of the WNBA’s Chicago Sky.

Power FC play their first three matches on the road against Carolina Ascent FC, Tampa Bay Sun FC and Dallas Trinity FC. Their home opener will be on Friday, September 13, when they host Fort Lauderdale United FC.
