It was made known ahead of kickoff against Syracuse on Saturday that Virginia Tech starting quarterback Kyron Drones won’t feature in their Week 10 game. He was ruled out of the conference game due to a reported lower-body injury.
The news came as a surprise to many fans as the quarterback was anticipated on the field for the game. In his absence, backup option Colin Schlee led the Hokies’ offense in the overtime loss to the Orange on Saturday.

Virginia Tech coach Brent Pry was questioned about the severity of Kyron Drones’ injury on Saturday following the loss to Syracuse. The coach described it as a day-to-day issue. However, he emphasized he had no plans to go into further detail about the situation.
“We’ll see,” Brent Pry said. “It’s day-to-day. I’m not going to talk about that.”
In his weekly media availability on Tuesday, Pry offered more insight into the situation of Drones as well as Bhayshul Tuten. The outstanding running back missed the Syracuse game due to a shoulder injury.
“They’re both questionable right now,” he said. “They’re obviously better than they were. Kyron is better than he was last week at this time. Bhayshul is probably yet to be determined. Today we’ll find out a lot. Hopefully, by the end of tomorrow, we feel good about both of those guys.”
What happened to Kyron Drones?
The Virginia Tech quarterback was only ruled out of the Syracuse game on Saturday due to a reported lower-body injury. Neither Brent Pry nor the Hokies gave further insight into the quarterback situation.
Pry was satisfied with the performance of Collin Schlee in Drones’ absence on Saturday. The quarterback completed 16-of-24 passes for 206 yards and a touchdown in the game. The coach gave a review at halftime.
“Yeah, I thought he’s played the game well. I thought he’s played fast. We’ve operated the offense,” Pry said. “One throw he’d probably like back, but he’s done a nice job. He’s made some plays and he’s managed the game.”
When will Kyron Drones return?
Kyron Drones is listed day-to-day according to Virginia Tech coach Brent Pry with a return date not provided. He’s considered questionable for Virginia Tech’s Week 11 game against Clemson this weekend.
Colin Schlee will return to the starting lineup on Saturday if the starting quarterback is not ready yet. This season, Drones has thrown for 1,447 yards and 10 touchdowns while also rushing for 323 yards and six touchdowns.
